Hello Parents,

Welcome to the 2009-2010 school year at CSE, “where we treasure learning”. This week in school we will be focusing on rituals and routines. These rituals and routines are essential to a smooth school year. As students progress through the week they will begin to be exposed to how third grade works. In my classroom they will learn to become not just cooperative workers but also productive independent ones. At home you can help my efforts at school, by encouraging your child to complete all of his or her homework in a timely manor. This week’s academic focus will be as follows:

Reading-District anchor lessons, these thirteen lessons are assigned and designed by DCPS to ready your child for using the reader’s workshop model in third grade. The lessons’ focus on developing good reading and listening habits. They also help students learn how to choose a, “Just Right Book,” and then how to use higher order thinking to understand what they read.

Math-We are beginning a unit on combining and comparing in Math Investigations. Students will learn to solve problems that involve comparisons—for example, finding the difference between two weights, or between two record-holding statistics. They will also do problems in which they determine how amounts of time, money, and measurement are combined. Through out the unit emphasis is placed on students developing their own addition and subtraction strategies that make sense to them.

Language Arts-No spelling homework this week. In grammar we will be focusing on how to change a question into a statement, and how to know what a sentence is.

Science-Students will be introduced to the science textbook and how to use its many parts. They will learn how to read science, be introduced to the process skills necessary to use different science tools, including the scientific method, and we will review safety procedures in science.

Social Studies-In our first social studies unit Community and Geography students will explore what makes each community, including their own, a special place where people live, work, and play.

Please keep an eye out this week for more updates from our classroom. Updates can be found through my e-mail communication and our classroom blog a link for that website can be found here http://dcps.oncoursesystems.com/school/webpage.aspx?id=759864
